Australia’s first one-stop hemp masonry hub

Nimbin, often regarded as Australia’s heart of alternative living and sustainability, is about to mark another significant milestone with the opening of HempScape Constructions, the country’s first dedicated one-stop for all things hemp masonry.

Located next to the iconic Bush Theatre, HempScape is the brainchild of Andrew Kavasilas, a pioneer in the Australian hemp industry who has long been at the forefront of the hemp movement in Australia.

His journey stretches back to the early days of industrial hemp cultivation, where he played a pivotal role in growing and multiplying seed from small, experimental samples to establish more robust and diverse strains.

Over the years, Andrew’s dedication to hemp extended into groundbreaking genetic research, including collaborations funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) at Southern Cross University.

His contributions have been integral in advancing the understanding of hemp genetics, supporting its growth as a sustainable crop, and paving the way for its varied applications in agriculture, construction, and beyond.

With the launch of HempScape, Andrew is bringing his decades-long expertise and passion for hemp to a community-focused space.

HempScape will serve as a hub for innovation, education and supply of hemp-based materials, particularly hemp masonry, a revolutionary building solution for sustainable construction.

A number of houses built from hemp masonry are planned for construction within the Fairview Estate, which Andrew said will be as unique and beautiful as the furniture he builds.

Hemp masonry, known for its insulation, fire resistance and carbon sequestration properties, is gaining traction as a modern alternative in green building.

HempScape will not only showcase a wide range of products but also act as a resource for builders, architects and homeowners interested in adopting hempcrete for sustainable living.

The shop promises to provide everything from hemp-based materials to expert advice, bridging the gap between traditional construction and eco-friendly innovation.

HempScape will host workshops, demonstrations and community events to spread knowledge of hemp’s incredible versatility and its role in building a greener future.

“For me, HempScape represents the culmination of years of work and passion for this amazing plant,” Andrew Kavasilas said.

“Nimbin feels like the perfect place for a dedicated hemp masonry hub, given this community’s history of embracing sustainability and forward-thinking solutions.”

The HempScape venture signifies a new era not only for Nimbin but also for the broader hemp and sustainable building industries across Australia for a future built on environmentally conscious practices and materials.
